Beware of These Ghoulish Sounds in Your HVAC System
October 04, 2024
Are you ready for pumpkin spice, candied apples, and haunted hayrides? If so, then you’re already embracing the new season. But are you prepared for the hauntings that infiltrate your home this time of year? We’re talking about those spooky sounds that often lurk in our HVAC systems.
We’ve all been there. One moment, we’re watching TV, and the next minute, we hear strange noises echoing from the walls. Is it a ghost? Probably not.
But don’t be scared! Our pros can help decipher those creepy HVAC sounds and put your mind at ease.
Common “Haunting Sounds” & What to Do About Them
Here’s how to decipher those frightening sounds this season. (Keep in mind that these are all possible reasons for strange sounds. To positively diagnose an issue, call our expert technicians.)
Hiss Hiss
Does it sound like Harry Potter is speaking parseltongue inside your heater? Nope, it’s not snakes (Well, we hope not, though it has happened!). A hissing often signals an air or refrigerant leak.
If your AC refrigerant leaks, you’ll probably notice higher energy bills, water leaks, and frozen evaporator coils. If this is the case, call us for a professional repair.
If you hear a hissing sound coming from your ductwork, you may have an air leak. Take a good listen. Does it sound like air is being let out of a balloon? If so, call us. It’s most likely an air leak, and we can help!
Rattle Rattle Rattle
Does it sound like Frankenstein’s monster is rattling his chains? Rattling can be the result of many things, but the most common reason is loose parts or screws. Other causes include debris stuck in the exhaust fan, a faulty motor, or loose panels. Call us to tighten any loose parts or to diagnose and repair them.
Squealing & Grinding
If your system is squealing like a squeaky mouse, you could have worn-out bearings or need to replace the belt in your blower motor. Over time, the belt can wear thin. And when it does, it squeals! If your system is grinding, the wear and tear have probably gotten the best of your system. Turn your unit off and give us a call for service. Don’t forget, we are always available for emergency heating service should you need it!
Popping or Cracking
Are you getting spooked by cracking or popping noises when you first turn on your system? You may want to check your burner. A dirty burner can often cause this type of loud sound. Another possible cause of popping or cracking is ice buildup inside the unit. Try this: Set the thermostat to a warmer temperature and see if the noise disappears. If so, great. If not, please call us for a furnace inspection.
Whistling
If your system is whistling, we recommend changing your air filters. Dirty filters can often cause a whistling sound. Filters should be changed every three months to keep your system working at top efficiency. Not sure what filter is best for your furnace heating system? Call us. We can help!
